Project Overview:
The Climate-Smart Agriculture Demonstration Plot and Learning Center in Bangali, Rupandehi, is an innovative project dedicated to advancing sustainable farming practices that help local farmers and communities thrive despite climate challenges. This initiative combines eco-friendly techniques like organic pest control, efficient water usage, and diversified crop and livestock farming to build climate resilience, enhance productivity, and promote economic sustainability within the community.
Project Goals:
- Climate Resilience: Equip local farmers with adaptive strategies that protect crops and livestock against climate extremes, emphasizing efficient water usage and soil health.
- Sustainable Livelihoods: Create alternative income sources through dragonfruit cultivation, mushroom farming, and fish rearing, offering community members diverse ways to boost their income and improve food security.
- Community Empowerment: Establish a hands-on Learning Center where farmers, especially women, gain practical skills and technical support to successfully implement climate-smart agriculture.
Key Practices at the Farm:
- Organic Pest Control: Using jhol mol (a natural bio-pesticide) and urine-based compost to enrich the soil and reduce reliance on chemicals.
- Water Efficiency and Conservation: Implementing greywater ponds and mulching practices to maximize water retention and reduce irrigation needs.
- Climate-Protective Infrastructure: Constructing plastic tunnels to shield crops from extreme weather, extend growing seasons, and enhance yield.
- Diversified Farming:
- Dragonfruit Cultivation: Introducing dragonfruit farming as a climate-resilient, high-value crop to strengthen the farm’s economic viability.
- Ponds for Fish Farming: Developing dedicated ponds for fish rearing, providing protein-rich food sources and additional income streams for local families.
- Integrated Livestock: Raising ducks, chickens, and small ruminants to naturally fertilize the land, complementing the farm’s organic cycle.
