Celebrating Women’s Empowerment: International Rural Women’s Day and International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

On the occasion of International Rural Women’s Day and International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, the Women Acting Together For Change  (WATCH) organized a series of programs at the WATCH office in Devdah. The event featured various activities aimed at celebrating the contributions of women in rural areas and raising awareness about poverty eradication.

A significant highlight of the event was the presentation of the 2024 International Creative Women Award, recognizing WATCH as one of the world’s top 10 organizations by the Women’s World Summit Foundation. The award certificate was formally presented during the ceremony, symbolizing WATCH’s commitment to empowering rural women and promoting sustainable development.

The program was graced by the esteemed presence of Honorable Speaker Tularam Gharti Magar, the Chief Guest from Lumbini Province. The event was presided over by Dr. Narayan Kaji Shrestha, Executive Director of WATCH, while Parbata Shrestha, Deputy Director, managed the proceedings. Bhawana Chhetri provided the welcoming remarks, setting a warm tone for the gathering.

Notable attendees included Honorable Member of Parliament Nirmala Devi Tharu, Devdah Municipality Mayor Dhruv Prasad Kharel, Tinao Rural Municipality Vice-Chair Lal Bahadur Thapa, and Sarawal Rural Municipality Vice-Chair Basamati Harijan. Also present were Hari Prasad Pandey, Chairperson of Ward No. 8 of Devdah Municipality, and Deans Umesh Bhujel and Indira Aryal from Lumbini Buddhist University, along with Dilkumari Gharti Magar.

During the event, the Chief Guest, Honorable Speaker Tularam Gharti Magar, presented the award certificate to WATCH, acknowledging its remarkable achievements in empowering rural women. The event also saw the participation of journalists and sisters from the Devdah, Sarawal, and Tinao communities of our womens group.

In recognition of their exemplary contributions, WAC honored Nirmala Devi Tharu, Indira Aryal, and Dilkumari Roka Magar, who were recipients of the prestigious award for being among the world’s top 10 women leaders. Additionally, Dilkumari Roka Magar, President of the  Small Farmers Agricultural Cooperative Ltd., extended her congratulations and best wishes to WATCH through a formal letter of appreciation.

The event served as a powerful reminder of the importance of empowering women in rural communities and addressing poverty through collective action and support. WATCH remains dedicated to its mission of fostering inclusive development and uplifting the voices of women in Nepal and beyond.
